Freedom School Afterschool Program
The Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools is a national recognized afterschool school reading enrichment program which focuses on five essential components: high quality literacy enrichment, parent and family involvement, civic engagement and social action, intergenerational leadership development, and nutrition, health and mental health. Academia Cesar Chavez CDF Freedom Schools will integrate the Latino culture into the five essential components. Each Class will have 10 students and be led by a nationally trained Servant Leader Intern. Academia Cesar Chavez CDF Freedom Schools Afterschool is available for student’s grade 3-6.
Academia del Pueblo
The Academia del Pueblo-Afterschool Program (ADP) is delivered using the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) Academia del Pueblo Curriculum. Theprogram has a strong, math, scien
ce, and reading focus and works on improving students’ academic skills, self-confidence as learners, ability to learn new material, and affirms their academic potential with parents and teachers. NCLR believes that all students can succeed academically in school if given proper assistance and instruction. ADP is delivered by ACC teachers and volunteers from the University of St. Thomas Tutor Mentor Program. ADP is available for students in grades 1-6.
Since 2010 ACC has formed a mariachi group, Mariachi ACC, mariachi music is a form of folk music from Mexico. Mariachi ACC is led by our ACC music teacher. The incoming 6th graders are able to attend the ACC summer school mariachi tryouts and then are chosen in September to form the mariachi group. Mariachi ACC performs for school celebrations but also represents the schools at many community events throughout the school year. Mariachi ACC practices 1 day week after school and students are expected to maintain good grades and be positive roles models.
Mexican folkloric and a variety of Latino dance genres are also offered one day a week after school during the school year and summer school. Experienced teachers or educational partner’s teacher the dance classes for students in grades 2nd through 5th. Students perform for school celebrations and also represent the school at many community events throughout the school year.
