I began working at Academia Cesar Chavez in January 2020 as a Middle School Literacy Interventionist. Individual and small group instruction are “in my wheelhouse”. The idiom “in my wheelhouse” describes the enclosed compartment of a ship that is the command center. Working intently with scholars to improve their reading is a situation where I am very comfortable. I might use a silly song or create a game that will help them understand new figurative language examples like “in my wheelhouse”.
When I toured the school buildings after my first interview I was impressed by the behavior of the scholars. The teachers gave them directions and the scholars did what was asked of them. Instead of the adversarial relationships I had experienced as an educational assistant and a teacher at other schools, I witnessed collaboration and determination. The families that showed up to school events and conferences made me understand the depth of dedication they had to their children’s education. Their children listened intently to my instructions and sought deeper understanding. They wanted to become better readers. They wanted to make their parents proud. I am honored to be a small piece of this partnership. I am energized by this virtuous cycle that draws forth deeper understanding. |
